The Health Sector Management Bootcamp at Duke Fuqua MBA

4 comments :
Duke MBA students who are also part of the Health Sector Management (HSM) program arrive on campus a week early for an intensive, 5-day, healthcare bootcamp. It serves as a primer of the US healthcare system and is the launch pad for our entire Duke MBA HSM experience. Half of the HSM folks do not come from the healthcare industry. Even for those of us who do, most only have experienced one or two different areas of a very diverse industry. While I was familiar with pharma and biotech, I had much to learn on the provider, payer, and regulatory aspects of the US healthcare system.

The Program 4 Entrepreneurs Kickoff at Fuqua

This was the first formal event on campus I attended after arriving in Durham back in the summer. I remember walking into an auditorium full of future classmates who were interested in startups - it was a great feeling to be immersed in such an entrepreneurial environment.

Like the posts on the random events I loved so far in the Fuqua MBA (part 1 and part 2), the next few posts of the blog will be about highlights in my fall semester. Hope that it'll help those who are applying for round 2 and 3!

Updated Dec 25, 2013. Added: Y-LP.com (news) & Pharma Boardroom (blog)

With how accessible information is nowadays, it's easy to simply spend 15-30 minutes every day to catch up on the latest happenings in biotech and pharma. This is a good daily routine that can be completed during mundane tasks such as waiting in line or riding the subway. It is also an important component in personal R&D that should be done routinely and can be started right away.

Was just going through my Outlook calendar from the start of school, and realized that there were a lot of one-off events that I enjoyed immensely. These all began with a club email or flier and I was curious enough to attend but was pleasantly surprised at how much I got out of it. There's many more than what's listed, but here's some examples, in a 2-part series.

Updated Dec 13, 2013.

First, a disclaimer: I am missing a lot of schools that should be considered. The goal here is not to provide a comprehensive list of schools to apply to; rather, my goal is to give a few examples of what MBA Health Sector Management programs can offer for people interested in healthcare/biotech to help ignite the school research process. Many of these programs are highly ranked. Indeed, the strength of the school's brand is one aspect to consider when choosing an MBA program. However, what's most important is to find a program that is the best fit for you - your background and your goals.

The RTP Biotech Scene, CED Biotech Forum

No comments :
One of the reasons I chose the Duke MBA Health Sector Management (HSM) program was because of its location in the Research Triangle Park (RTP). RTP is one of the leading biotech hubs in the world. The region is home to 422 bioscience companies and is anchored by 3 research universities - Duke, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University.

RTP was a target location for me as I wanted to network with biotech professionals and gain a meaningful experience with those firms during my 2 years in the Duke MBA program.
